Vanessa Hudgens brought champagne to the 2015 Tony Awards on Sunday, with a performance of the ode to bubbly from Gigi.
Hudgens, Corey Cott, Victoria Clark and the cast took the stage for “The Night They Invented Champagne” from the Eric Schaeffer-directed show. Wearing Gigi’s bright red dress and bow in her hair, Hudgens twirled around carrying a champagne glass and linking arms with Cott and Clark before the trio was joined by a gaggle of performers for a sweeping dance full of high kicks and leaps. Bubbles were shown floating near the top of Radio City Music Hall at the end of the performance and Tony co-hosts Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cumming gave the cast glasses of bubbly as they exited the stage.
The Broadway adaptation of the musical from screenwriter and lyricist Alan Jay Lerner and composer Frederick Loewe follows a Parisian tomboy’s path to love and womanhood. It only received one Tony nomination, but it’s one of a few largely snubbed shows that also got a spotlight on Sunday night’s show. As perhaps an acknowledgement of this, Tisdale introduced the performance by saying that this year’s Tonys was celebrating the “entire Broadway season,” presenting performances from new musicals entertaining audiences nearly every night.
The Broadway-lauding awards show also included a 10th-anniversary celebration of Jersey Boys as well as performances by the casts of Finding Neverland, On the Twentieth Century, Something Rotten!, The Visit, It Shoulda Been You, The King and I, An American in Paris, Fun Home and On the Town.
The broadcast — presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing — aired live on CBS on Sunday night.
