Two Broadway babies currently working in television, Patina Miller and Andrew Rannells, will announce the nominations for the 70th Annual Tony Awards.
Miller, who is a regular on the CBS drama Madam Secretary, made her Broadway debut in the lead role of Sister Act in 2011, earning a Tony nomination for lead actress in a musical. She won that award two years later for Pippin.
Rannells, currently seen on HBO’s Girls, was nominated for lead actor in a musical for The Book of Mormon in 2011. He has also appeared on Broadway in Hairspray, Jersey Boys and in the title role of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. He stepped into the role of King George in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton last year during regular castmember Jonathan Groff’s absence to film HBO’s Looking movie.
Miller and Rannells will announce the nominations May 3 live from the Paramount Hotel in New York’s theater district at 8:30 a.m. ET on CBS This Morning and TonyAwards.com.
While Hamilton is widely expected to dominate this year’s Tony Awards, sweeping most of the top musical honors, several of the main acting categories look to be extremely competitive, as do the races for best play, musical revival and play revival.
The Tonys will be broadcast live on CBS from the Beacon Theatre in New York on Sunday, June 12, at 8 p.m. ET (delayed PT). This year’s ceremony will be hosted by James Corden, a 2012 Tony winner for One Man, Two Guvnors.
