Tom Cruise looks set to be kicking the tires and lighting the fires once more as the producer of the Top Gun sequel says that any film would see “Maverick playing Maverick.”
At the Terminator: Genisys press conference in Berlin, Skydance CEO David Ellison, via Collider, all but confirmed Cruise’s involvement in the long-gestating project by admitting that “[t]here is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie.”
He added: “There is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick.”
Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the first movie, has also previously said that Cruise would be part of any sequel.
Ellison did confirm that the script for the film is being written right now by Justin Marks, and that the writer will “really update what that world for fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today.”
Top Gun 2 will also be in 3D and Imax and will feature practical special effects, something that Cruise is known for. “As everyone knows with Tom, he is 100 percent going to want to be in those airplanes shooting it practically,” Ellison said.
As to the plot details, Ellison suggested that Maverick and his team of crack fighter pilots would take on the modern menace of drones. “This world has not been explored,” he said, adding: “It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology, and fifth-generation fighters are really what the United States Navy is calling the last man-made fighter that we’re actually going to produce, so it’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting.”
