The Cohen Media Group has picked up U.S. distribution rights to Luc Besson’s newest film, The Lady, from EuropaCorp.
The film, which stars Michelle Yeoh as Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese pro-democracy leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner, had its world premiere Sept. 12 at the Toronto International Film Festival. Yeoh and her co-star David Thewlis have been mentioned as possible contenders in this year’s Oscar race. CMG is planning an end of year award-qualifying engagement, followed by a theatrical release early next year.

CMG, which produced Frozen River in 2008, moved into distribution last year with the release of Outside the Law.
“Luc Besson has created an amazing film and we are so fortunate to be in business with EuropaCorp on The Lady,” CMG CEO Charles S. Cohen said.
The deal was negotiated by Cohen with Christophe Lambert, CEO of EuropoCorp.
