TORONTO — The Toronto International Film Festival will give a world premiere to Godfrey Reggio’s Visitors on Sept. 8, to be presented by Steven Soderbergh.
The Philip Glass score will receive a live accompaniment by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in the Elgin Theatre.
Separately, Cinedigm announced that it has acquired North American rights to the film, which it will release theatrically in 4K in the fall.
“Reggio’s Visitors is a poignant, powerful film. Coupled with live performance by 65 Members of the TSO, this event is an opportunity for Toronto audiences to be moved and to experience film in a whole new way,” said TIFF director and CEO Piers Handling on Wednesday.
“Thirty years after Koyaanisqatsi, Godfrey Reggio — with the support of Philip Glass and Jon Kane — once again leapfrogs over us earth-bound filmmakers and creates another stunning, wordless portrait of modern life,” Soderbergh said in a statement.
“Visitors is truly a mind-altering one-of-a-kind cinema event. What Godfrey, Philip and Jon have created is wholly unique and all of us at Cinedigm are thrilled to partner with them and Steven Soderbergh to bring their vision to audiences everywhere,” Cinedigm co-president Susan Margolin said.
Visitors is the fourth feature-length collaboration between Reggio (Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi and Naqoyqatsi) and Glass, together with filmmaker Kane.
The 2013 Toronto International Film Festival is set to run from Sept. 5-15.
The acquisition deal was negotiated by Cinedigm director of acquisitions Emily Rothschild with Larry Taub repping the filmmakers.
