IFC Films has acquired U.S. rights to Liza Johnson‘s Hateship Loveship.
The film, based on a short story by Alice Munro with a screenplay by Mark Poirier, stars Kristen Wiig, Guy Pearce, Hailee Steinfeld, Nick Nolte, Christine Lahti, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Sami Gayle.

Wiig stars as Johanna Parry, a profoundly shy, unadorned woman who is hired by Mr. McCauley (Nolte) as a housekeeper and a primary caregiver to his granddaughter, Sabitha (Steinfeld). When Sabitha uses technology to foster a pseudo-relationship between her widowed father (Pearce) and Johanna, an unlikely relationship blooms.
The film made its world premiere as a special presentation at the 2013 Toronto Film Festival.
Robert Ogden Barnum, Michael Benaroya, Jamin O’Brien, Dylan Sellers and Cassian Elwes produced the film. Jacob Pechenik, Michael Raimondi and Abigail Disney are executive producers.
TORONTO REVIEW: Hateship Loveship
“We were floored by Kristen Wiig’s extraordinary performance in Hateship Loveship as well as the strong ensemble cast of outstanding actors,” Sundance Selects/IFC Films president Jonathan Sehring said. “This film is a touching examination of family dynamics, and we think U.S. audiences are going to relate both to the film and to Kristen’s brilliant character.”
The deal for the film was negotiated by Sundance Selects/IFC Films’ Arianna Bocco. UTA Independent Film Group and Elwes repped the filmmakers.
IFC Films is a sister division to IFC Midnight and Sundance Selects and is owned and operated by AMC Networks Inc.
