‘Toy Story 4’ Will Be “A Romantic Comedy,” Says Pixar President

Pixar president Jim Morris revealed more information about the focus and status of the upcoming, fourth Toy Story film in an interview with Disney Latino’s blog.

Morris said that the movie, which was announced in November, is not a continuation of Toy Story 3 or “part of [the] trilogy” of past Toy Story films. Furthermore, Toy Story 4, will be “love story,” Morris explained, adding that it won’t be about the characters interacting with kids.

“It’s not a continuation of the end of Toy Story 3,” Morris said of Toy Story 4. “Temporarily it is, but it will be a love story. It will be a romantic comedy. The focus is not going to be placed on the interaction between the characters and children.”

He later said, “The third film had ended in a very beautiful way and completed the trilogy. I think this film won’t be part of that trilogy. It’s a separate story, which I don’t know if it will have a sequel.”

Disney and Pixar chief creative officer John Lasseter is directing the fourth Toy Story film, which is set to hit theaters on June 16, 2017. Rashida Jones and Will McCormack wrote the script and Galyn Susman is producing. After the fourth film was announced, Lasseter explained how they decided to do another film.

“We love these characters so much; they are like family to us,” the exec, who also directed the first two Toy Story films, said in a statement. “We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before. Toy Story 3 ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another Toy Story movie. But when Andrew [Stanton], Pete [Docter], Lee [Unkrich] and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie — and I wanted to direct it myself.”

Morris’ Disney Latino interview was posted in December, but several English-language outlets just started picking up his comments, posted in Spanish, this week. Morris told the blog that they were doing the “third table-reading” for Toy Story 4. 

“Usually, after we worked on the idea with the story team and the writers finish the script we bring in Pixar employees or even outside people to sit down and read the script,” he explained. “It’s evolving really well. We’re making a very nice story.”

The Toy Story trilogy earned $1.94 billion worldwide, with the third film grossing a franchise high of $1.1 billion, making it the highest-grossing animated film of all time until Frozen surpassed it last March.
