Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the biggest movie event of the year, maybe the decade. So it would be incredibly advantageous to advertise an upcoming release in front of the triumphant return of Han, Leia and Luke.
THR went to one of the first showings of Disney and Lucasfilm’s Force Awakens on Thursday (Dec. 17) at 7 p.m. at the Regal L.A. Live Stadium 14 in downtown Los Angeles. Before the 3D showing, audiences were treated to eight trailers: Kung Fu Panda 3, Warcraft, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, The 5th Wave, Independence Day: Resurgence, X-Men: Apocalypse, The Jungle Book, Kubo and the Two Strings and The Finest Hours.
Trailer play will vary to some degree depending upon the circuit or theater. For instance, a trailer for Star Trek Beyond will also be debuting before Force Awakens. Certain theater chains, like ArcLight, limit trailers, and the format of the screening will affect the selection when it comes to Disney trailers. The ArcLight Hollywood opening night screening had four trailers: Star Trek, X-Men, The Jungle Book and The Finest Hours.
Disney will show Zootopia and Captain America: Civil War in 2D shows, The Jungle Book and The Finest Hours in 3D auditoriums and Civil War and The Jungle Book in Imax theaters.
Here are some of the spots that can be expected at Star Wars showings, nationwide.
Independence Day: Resurgence, 20th Century Fox
Captain America: Civil War, Disney
X-Men: Apocalypse, 20th Century Fox
