‘Twilight’ Author Dissed By ‘Vampire Chronicles’ Writer

Its a war of the vampire wordsmiths. 

Anne Rice, author of the Vampire Chronicles series which included the book-turned-movie Interview With the Vampire, took to her Facebook page Oct. 28 to air her grievances with another living dead author, The Twilight Saga‘s Stephenie Meyer.

“Lestat and Louie feel sorry for vampires that sparkle in the sun,” said Rice, referring to her popular characters (who were portrayed by Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt in the 1994 movie). “They would never hurt immortals who choose to spend eternity going to high school over and over again in a small town —- anymore than they would hurt the physically disabled or the mentally challenged. My vampires possess gravitas. They can afford to be merciful.”

The statements, which aren’t Rice’s first on the popular Twilight series’ Cullen clan (in 2009 she said the series was “made for 12 year olds” and “does not entirely make sense”), quickly spurred a Facebook comment-a-thon, as of Tuesday, 1,990 users had expressed their opinion on the author’s dig.

And, while many agreed with her, proclaiming “Team Anne Rice!” and bashing the Twilight films as the “worst vampire movies ever made,” many also took issue with her attack. 

“Ms Rice really shouldn’t throw stones, after she allowed her masterpiece novels to be turned into the most God awful vampire movies in history,” said Scott Astley.

While Rachel Dehlinger wrote, “It must be hard to see someone else excelling in an area where your popularity is beginning to fade”.

Rice was eventually move to comment again in an attempt to clarify, saying, “there’s plenty of room for a little humour in talking about the various interpretations.” 

She isn’t the only author to take a stab at Meyer. In 2009, Stephen King said, “Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn.” Adding, “She’s not very good.” 

Meyer has yet to comment on the attacks.
