Twitter Appears to Temporarily Suspend David Duke’s Account

Twitter appeared on Monday morning to temporarily suspend the account of David Duke, the former Imperial Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan and stanch supporter of President Donald Trump. 

The exact time the account was suspended is unclear, but by 10:40 a.m., Duke’s handle was accessible again. However, his followers and those he followed had been taken back to zero. 

Around 10:56 a.m., Duke confirmed he had returned. 

“I’m back. Though I have no idea why I was suspended. Thank you to all of the wonderful people who offered support. #FreeDavidDuke,” Duke tweeted. 

The social media giant in recent months had suspended the accounts of Richard Spencer (the account was eventually reinstated) and Milo Yiannopoulos for violating its terms of service. 

Twitter did not immediately return a request for comment. 

Duke, a white nationalist, made headlines a few weeks ago when he and Captain America star Chris Evans traded barbs on Twitter. 

The 35-year-old actor expressed his displeasure with recently confirmed Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who Duke has praised in the past.

“If David Duke….DAVID!…DUKE!… thinks you’re right, then you are unequivocally wrong. The confirmation of @jeffsessions is beyond words,” Evans tweeted.

Duke responded with, “Typical dumb actor – if everything I say is wrong, then when I say I oppose these Zionists wars, you must be for them, Captain America!?”

Evans then jabbed back with a link to a collection of racist quotes from Duke: “@DrDavidDuke well if these nuggets of bigotry are some of your OTHER thoughts, then I stand by my original tweet. We can’t let hatred be the loudest voice.”

11:15 a.m.: Duke tweeted he was back. 

10:40 a.m.: Duke’s Twitter handle is accessible again.
