An unidentified gunman opened fire in an Oregon college on Thursday, killing 10 people and injuring 7 more.
The shooting took place in the morning at Umpqua Community College near Roseburg. Authorities have identified the shooter as 26-year-old Chris Harper Mercer.
President Barack Obama spoke about the mass shooting hours after it occurred, stressing that America’s gun laws needed to be changed if future shootings were to be avoided.
“Somehow this has become routine,” said Obama. “The reporting has become routine. My response here, from this podium, has become routine. Each time this happens, I’m going to say that we can actually do something about it. But we are going to have to change our laws. This is not something I can do by myself. I hope and pray that I don’t have to come out again during my tenure as president to offer my condolences to families. But based on my experience as president, I can’t guarantee that, and that’s terrible to say,” he said.
