Gone Girl fought off a dystopian thriller, a possessed doll and the biggest boy band on the planet to retain the U.K. box-office crown for a second week. David Fincher’s adaptation of the best-selling book took in $4.9 million, bringing its overall U.K. total to $15.7 million so far and giving Fincher his biggest U.K. two-week opening of all time.
The second, third and fourth spots were reserved for a trio of newcomers. Wes Ball’s YA adaptation The Maze Runner, which escaped with $3.2 million in its opening week, came in at No. 2, followed by The Conjuring prequel Annabelle, which spooked in $3.1 million.

Last of the debuting threesome was One Direction: Where We Are – The Concert Film, which scooped up $1.62 million. Despite showing their cherubic faces on limited release for one weekend only, the One Direction boys did enough to push last week’s number two film, Dracula Untold, into fifth place this week.
The fourth and final new entry, Hugh Grant rom-com vehicle The Rewrite, stuttered into ninth position with $535,000.
