Universal PicturesUniversal Pictures has surpassed its previous domestic box office record, reaching a new all-time high of $1.352 billion through Sunday.
The previous record of $1.335 billion was set in 2012.
The studio rocketed to its new record with the help of box office behemoths Fast & Furious 6 — which was Universal’s top North American opening of 2013 ($238.7 million domestically to date) and the second-highest domestic opening of the year (behind Iron Man 3) — and Illumination Entertainment’s Despicable Me 2, which had the highest opening for an animated film in 2013 domestically ($365.9 million domestically to date).
Other Universal films that claimed the number-one spot include Mama ($71.6 million), Identity Thief ($134.5 million), Oblivion ($89.1 million), The Purge ($64.5 million), 2 Guns ($75.6 million) and Riddick ($42 million).
Universal’s total worldwide grosses to date are $3.49 billion.
The studio has two films yet to be released in 2013: 47 Ronin, starring Keanu Reeves; and in limited release on Dec. 25, the war drama Lone Survivor, starring Mark Wahlberg.
