Kicking off what’s expected to be a busy acquisitions market for fall festival titles, Harvey Weinstein‘s team has closed a deal for the U.S. rights to Australian film Tracks, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The drama, directed by John Curran and starring Mia Wasikowska as a young woman who sets off on a 1,700 mile trek across Australia, received rave reviews late last week when making its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. It next plays at both the Telluride and Toronto film festivals.
Wasikowska stars opposite Adam Driver in the movie, adapted by Marion Nelson from Robyn Davidson‘s best-selling book of the same name. Driver plays a photographer who chronicled the journey for National Geographic magazine. See-Saw Films’ Emile Sherman and Iain Canning produced the film.
“The response to this film out of Venice and Telluride was nothing short of astounding and is well deserved,” Harvey Weinstein said in a statement. “We’ve had great experiences in the past working with Emile Sherman and Iain Canning and are thrilled to be on board with such talent as John Curran, Mia Wasikowska and Adam Driver.”
The deal for tje U.S. rights was brokered by CAA, HanWay Films and Loeb & Loeb.
Weinstein’s company is planning a 2014 release.
