Sarah Palin is getting blamed by many for Saturday’s shooting in Arizona, which left six people dead and wounded several others, including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.
But one person who isn’t pointing fingers at Alaska’s former governor is Barbara Walters, who has featured Palin on her annual list of the 10 most fascinating people for three consecutive years. The View co-host came to Palin’s defense Monday on ABC’s daytime talk show.
“This is a deranged young man,” she said of Jared Lee Loughner, who has been charged in the shooting with five federal counts, including the attempted assassination of a member of Congress. “This is a Timothy McVeigh. Whether this happened because there is too much commentary, too much violence … whether that really spurred him on or whether he’s just a very sick person, we don’t know and we don’t know what his motives are. And we can hope that all the vitriol calms down. And to blame Sarah Palin, as some are doing, I think is very unfair to her.”
Palin is being singled out for a map she put out featuring Giffords’ district, and others, in crosshairs.
“I’m feeling bad for Sarah Palin,” Walters said. “I don’t think that’s what she should have said, and certainly crosshairs are very scary.”
A total of 20 people were wounded during Saturday’s shooting, which took place at a meet-and-greet for Giffords held outside a supermarket. Giffords remains in critical condition after being shot at point-blank range. Six others were killed, including a 9-year-old girl.
