Channing Tatum and Steve Carell are both at the Cannes Film Festival for the very first time, with their film Foxcatcher premiering in competition on May 19.
“When people would use the word ‘competition,’ I would start freaking out,” says Tatum of being part of the festival.
Directed by Bennett Miller, the film is based on the true, tragic story of Mark Schultz (Tatum), an Olympic wrestler who meets an eccentric multimillionaire (Carell) who offers to sponsor his attempt to make it to the next Olympics. Mark Ruffalo plays Schultz’s brother, who also decides to live in du Pont’s home and coach the wrestling team.

When the trio sat down with The Hollywood Reporter on the afternoon before their premiere, they revealed that the set for the film was a very serious place to be.
“This movie was not fun, at all. It pretty much sucked the whole time, and it was a very, very painful experience, but in the best way,” states Tatum.
Tatum says that the actors felt the gravity of the true story and kept mostly in character while on set.
“For Channing and me, honestly, coming to Cannes is, I think, the first time we have had a legitimate conversation,” revealed Carell, whose performance was called “career-changing” in THR‘s review.
“It was a very quiet set, and Bennett purposely, I think, created that set to feel that way,” adds Ruffalo.
