In May, The Hollywood Reporter asked 2,120 of Hollywood’s top players — including Fox chief Jim Gianopulos, Disney’s Alan Horn, director Gary Ross, producer Frank Marshall, Warner Bros.’ Sue Kroll, agent Robert Newman, attorney John Burke and filmmaker John Singleton — to rank their favorite movies of all time.
The result was “Hollywood’s 100 Favorite Films,” which ran in the July 4 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine — and can be neatly summed up in a video just four minutes long. The video also includes commentary from Thelma & Louise stars Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis and West Side Story‘s Rita Moreno and George Chakiris, who reunited for the issue.
LIST Hollywood’s 100 Favorite Films
As the video countdown demonstrates, this list is far more commercial than the typical critics’ picks, with animated films The Lion King and Toy Story making appearances and far more comedies being given attention than the Academy has previously shown with best picture nominations. In addition, that movie ranking varied tremendously across age group and occupational demographics.
There are quite a few surprises on the list (you may be shocked at where Star Wars and Back to the Future ranked) and many best picture Oscar winners that didn’t make the cut, but as Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan points out, choosing your top 20 favorite movies is “the equivalent of having a party-size bag of Nacho Doritos, then being told to eat only five.” And just like Gilligan’s guilty pleasure, family films such as The Princess Bride or Beauty and the Beast, with less critical acclaim than Oscar-winning dramas, may have special places in the hearts of Hollywood’s elite, who felt compelled to include them on their list of favorites.
