Vin Scully Will Return as Voice of the Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers, who have made recent headlines with a slew of high-profile player acquisitions, announced Sunday that Vin Scully will return to broadcast their games next season, his 64th with the ballclub.

“The new ownership of the Dodgers has revitalized the city, the team, the fans and myself,” Scully said in a statement. “I am so convinced of their great purpose and leadership that I eagerly look forward to joining them in pursuit of the next Dodgers championship.”

Scully, 84, started with the team in Brooklyn in 1950. He has called three perfect games, 25 no-hitters, 25 World Series and six Dodgers World Series championships.

The longest-tenured broadcaster in sports, the Hall of Famer works all Dodger home games (in addition to road games in California and Arizona) on television for KCAL Channel 9 and Fox’s Prime Ticket and the first three innings of each game on Fox local radio.

“It was a treat to be able to listen to Chick Hearn through my years with the Lakers,” Dodgers co-owner Magic Johnson said, “and it’s been great to be able to listen to Vin work his magic in the broadcast booth since I came to Los Angeles in 1979.”

The Dodgers, under new ownership this season, this weekend added first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, pitcher Josh Beckett and outfielder Carl Crawford in a trade with Boston after acquiring infielder Hanley Ramirez from Miami and outfielder Shane Victorino from Philadelphia in other deals. They entered play Sunday two games behind the first-place San Francisco Giants in the National League West.
