LONDON – British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood has visited WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in the Ecuadorian embassy in London just a couple of weeks after a dinner visit from Lady Gaga.
The designer wore a T-shirt with the words “I am Julian Assange” next to a picture of her own face, the Daily Telegraph reported. She also wore it when she closed her recent London show,
Westwood has expressed support for the controversial Australian, but it was the first time she had visited Assange in the embassy where he has been holed up since this summer to avoid extradition to Sweden where he would be questioned about claims of sexual assault.
Assange and his supporters have said they fear that Sweden would send the whistleblower to the U.S. where he could face the death penalty. British police have said they would arrest the WikiLeaks founder should he leave the embassy.
Other prominent Assange supporters include directors Michael Moore and Oliver Stone. Several producers have been working on film and TV film projects about Assange and his life.
