Vladimir Putin Spokesman Calls Oliver Stone “Talented and Unpredictable”

Russian president Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that top Kremlin officials “can’t wait” to watch Oliver Stone’s The Putin Interviews, scheduled to run  June 12-15 on Showtime.

“We are interested in seeing how Oliver Stone organized the material,” Peskov was quoted as saying by the Russian online news magazine Life on Wednesday, adding that Stone is “talented and unpredictable when it comes to creative expression.”

There are no plans regarding a Russian release of the four-part interview-based documentary, filmed by the Oscar-winning director over the course of four in-person interviews with Putin in the past two years.

Similarly, there is no word on how the Russian leader is expected to watch the documentary.

Meanwhile, Russian media have been heavily quoting from parts of the documentary, which have already been revealed.

A year ago, when Stone’s most recent feature, Snowden — centered on NSA leaker Edward Snowden, living in exile in Russi, — was released, Peskov praised it as a “must-see,” but it is not clear if Putin himself watched the movie.

Over the last few years, Stone has often defended Putin’s policies, including those in neighboring Ukraine.

In 2016, he produced Ukraina v ogne (Ukraine on Fire), a documentary that critics said presented a Kremlin-friendly version of the events of the 2014 Maidan revolution in Ukraine, which ousted the country’s previous president, Viktor Yanukovych.
