Al Pacino is in need of a jolt in the new trailer for The Humbling — and who better to revitalize him than a young, starstruck lesbian?
Barry Levinson‘s adaptation of the Philip Roth novel casts Pacino as an actor with a flatlining career and sense of hope. “Why don’t you get me a deal writing my memoirs? Isn’t that what washed-up actors do?” he asks his agent. And when he has a mishap onstage during King Lear, he discovers, “I’m having trouble separating a scene from a play with real life.”
Between trying to perfect a post-faceplant moan and suggesting getting his money back after he kills himself, he crosses his paths with a family friend and fangirl played by Greta Gerwig — for better or for worse.
The Millennium Entertainment title, which made a splash at Toronto Film Festival, also stars Kyra Sedgwick, Charles Grodin, Dianne Wiest and Dan Hedaya. Check it out in the player below.
The Humbling hits theaters and VOD on Jan. 23, 2015.
