After her golden run through this season of America’s Got Talent, capped by Wednesday night’s coronation, 12-year-old Grace VanderWaal is headed to Las Vegas to begin what could be a lucrative career. The scratchy-voiced singer wowed audiences week after week with her heartfelt originals about her sister and the pains of being pure at (tween) heart, plus waterworks-inducing songs about forging your own path like “I Don’t Know My Name.”
With a quavery delivery and ukulele-strumming quirkiness that made her stand out among the jugglers, contortionists, Frank Sinatra impersonators, mentalists and magicians, VanderWaal was pegged early by judge Howie Mandel as having the potential to be “bigger than Taylor Swift,” thanks to her unique talents and irony-free original songs.
Only time will tell where VanderWaal will wind up, but if you need to catch up on her performances or just want to relive the magic, here are seven of her top moments.
The Golden Buzzer — “I Don’t Know My Name” (audition) 35.3 million views (127.5 million views on Facebook)
“Beautiful Thing” 4.5 million views
“Clay” 1.9 million views
“House of Gold” 850,390 views
“Light the Sky” 399,053
“Gossip Girl” 661,424 views
“The Good Just Gets Better” 864,543
VanderWaal’s YouTube channel also has videos of her covering songs by Meghan Trainor, Twenty One Pilots and John Lennon.
