This story first appeared in the April 26 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.
“Not!” In-the-know filmmakers must have been bowled over to hear that Mike Myers, Dana Carvey and director Penelope Spheeris are all slated to attend a Wayne’s World reunion panel April 23 at the Academy’s Wilshire Boulevard headquarters.
After all, Carvey and Spheeris both notoriously fell out with Myers despite the 1992 feel-good film’s huge success. Myers blocked Spheeris from directing the 1993 sequel because she’d ignored his edit suggestions on the original (her cut already had tested well). And Carvey felt Myers later stole his Dr. Evil impression for Austin Powers, which supposedly was based on Carvey’s goof on Lorne Michaels.

The SNL creator, a Wayne’s World producer, will host the panel, which will be introduced by another of the film’s producers, current Academy president Hawk Koch. It was he who encouraged the parties finally to make public peace.
According to Spheeris, it was time to let bygones be bygones anyway. “We’re all getting too old to be pissed,” she says. “Wayne’s World has such a beautiful, uplifting spirit about it. Why should there be a dark cloud? This is going to be cathartic. Everyone’s going to walk out of there high — sort of like they did when they watched the movie.”
