Silicon Valley tech giants and Latin lovers are among what’s hitting theaters this weekend in The Circle and How to be a Latin Lover. Also appearing on the big screen is Rami Malek in Buster’s Mal Heart and the unique hybrid film Sleight.
Here’s what The Hollywood Reporter‘s critics are saying about the weekend’s new offerings (as well as which film will likely top the weekend box office).
Tom Hanks, Emma Watson and John Boyega star in the indie thriller based on Dave Eggers‘ novel that takes a look at the dangers of new tech innovations, particularly when it comes to privacy. John DeFore writes in his review that “certain plot points might seem far-fetched, but only until you think of similar things that have already happened, similar liberties that have been happily surrendered by users of popular networks. Still, the resolution of her (Watson’s) growing moral qualms is problematic.”
Eugenio Derbez stars opposite Salma Hayek, Rob Lowe, Kristen Bell, Raphael Alejandro, Raquel Welch and Rob Riggle as Latin heartthrob/TV personality Maximo who is living in the lap of luxury until he’s dumped by his wealthy wife of 25 years and forced to move in with his estranged sister and nephew. Maximo once again is set on using his charismatic ways to woo a widowed billionaire, but along the way learns important values including the meaning of family.
The psychological puzzle that is Buster’s Mal Heart follows Rami Malek as Buster, a paranoid fugitive on the run who survives by breaking into empty vacation homes. John DeFore writes in his review that “Fans of Mr. Robot won’t be disappointed in the least by this vehicle for Emmy-winning series star Rami Malek, which both fits in with Mr. Robot‘s delusion-prone paranoia and lets the charismatic actor stretch out in his first feature lead.” Read the full review here.
Jacob Latimore stars in Blumhouse’s latest feature as a street magician and drug dealer who must resort to his skills in order to save his younger sister from kidnappers. Justin Lowe writes in his review that JD Dillard’s film is a “modestly scaled thriller that’s equally an accessible domestic drama.” He adds that the hybrid feature “satisfies both dramatically and stylistically.”
