LONDON – Extended Wimbledon coverage on Monday roughly doubled the full-day TV audience share of BBC Two.
The U.K. public broadcaster’s second-biggest TV network in terms of ratings saw its share of total TV viewers in Britain rise to 11 percent, “around double its normal figure,” ratings consultancy Attentional said. In a tweet, it said the boost was “thanks to 10 hours of #Wimbledon.”
The network’s coverage of the Grand Slam tournament in London averaged 1.85 million viewers on Monday, a share of 15.3 percent of people watching TV in Britain at the time, according to the ratings data. BBC Two’s coverage started at 11:30 a.m.
Extended live coverage of the showdown between Novak Djokovic and Jo-Wilfred Tsonga between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. local time drew an audience of 3.7 million, or a 16.7 percent share, the highest of the day. Djokovic won in three sets to advance to the quarterfinals.
Scottish star Andy Murray tends to be the biggest Wimbledon ratings draw for the BBC. Last year, his victory over Djokovic in the final averaged 12.1 million viewers.
The match hit the second-highest peak rating ever for Wimbledon coverage on the BBC with 17.29 million people.
