Woody Allen’s Cannes out-of-competition movie Cafe Society has been announced as the closing-night film of the 38th edition of the Moscow International Film Festival next month.
The pic will be MIFF’s first-ever closing film that previously screened at the Cannes fest.
A spokesperson for MIFF told The Hollywood Reporter that it is not yet clear if Allen will attend the festival.
Cafe Society already has a Russian distributor. Volga picked up theatrical rights to the movie and will release it on July 21, three weeks after MIFF draws to a close.
Over the last decade and a half, Allen’s films have been popular with Russian audiences, and only last year’s pic Irrational Man didn’t hit the $1 million mark, taking in $715,000.
KE-DI by veteran Russian director Sergei Solovyov is set to screen as MIFF’s opening-night film on June 23.
The fest’s complete lineup is expected to be announced early next month.
Bulgarian director Ivaylo Hristov will be chair of the main competition’s jury, which also will include Indian producer Randhir Kapoor and German helmer Ulrike Ottinger.
