The countdown is on for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Before the global sporting event kicks off in Rio de Janeiro in 99 days, Fox Sports and Budweiser have teamed up to present Rise as One, a six-episode series about the love of the game premiering on March 25 at 8 p.m. ET on Fox Sports 1.
Like the highly anticipated tournament, the documentary airs in 55 countries around the world and focuses on six soccer — or football as it is most commonly referred to — stories from across the globe.
Created by veteran filmmakers Scott Boggins and Gabriel Spitzer, the series spans international borders, race, gender and politics, as it tells how the sport has helped people overcome their cultural differences to unite.
Among the groundbreaking stories that are featured in the series are an exhibition match against Brazil that helped lift spirits in war-torn Haiti; the U.S. and Iranian teams going head-to-head in 1998 amidst a volatile political environment; how a plane crash killed all but three of Zambia’s national team; and a frozen “football” match between British and French troops in World War I when the soldiers declared a secret cease-fire to have a kick around.
As well as being the official sponsor of the World Cup, Budweiser will act as a partner on the Kicking + Screening Soccer Film Festival, a series of soccer cultural events celebrating the beautiful game in New York City April 8-11.
