Ed Piskor’s retelling of X-Men history continues this week, with the release of the first issue of X-Men: Grand Design — Second Genesis, the middle chapter of his critically acclaimed reimagining of the first quarter century of the fan-favorite superteam.
The new two-issue series picks up from the first installment of Piskor’s trilogy, with what many X-fans consider the highpoint for the property: the first decade after Storm, Colossus, Wolverine and more arrive to form the “All-New, All-Different” X-Men.
“It wouldn’t be controversial to say that the eras covered in Second Genesis comprise some of the most beloved stories from X-Men lore,” the cartoonist told Heat Vision via email. “It was a blast investigating those classic comics at a microscopic level and I came out a better cartoonist because of it.”
The previous installment of his trilogy retold events of the initial volume of Marvel’s mutant superteam — incorporating material that was later retconned into that era well after the original 1963-1970 run.
