'Yardie' Trailer: Idris Elba's Directorial Debut Gets Gritty 1980s London

For his directorial debut, Idris Elba chose this adaptation of Victor Headley's novel about coming of age in 1970s Jamaica and London's Hackney district in the 1980s.  When a young boy witnesses his brother‘s assassination, a powerful Don gives him a home. But, a decade later, when he reunites with his girlfriend and their daughter, his past comes back to haunt him.
 

Idris Elba unleashed the first teaser trailer for his directorial debut, Yardie, on Thursday.

The film, which had its debut at Sundance and is screening this week in Berlin, is adapted from the cult 1992 novel by Jamaican-born British writer Victor Headley. The story follows a young Jamaican man named D (Aml Ameen) on his path of crime and, eventually, a quest for revenge over the murder of his older brother. 

The trailer tracks the action from the gang wars of Kingston in Jamaica to the gritty streets of 1980s London, where someone poses the question “Will you go with the righteous, or will you go with the damned?”

Judging by the gun-fueled action that follows, it seem D — at least initially — chooses the latter.

Stephen Graham, Mark Rhino Smith, Akin Gazi, Fraser James and recent BIFA winner Naomi Ackie also star in Yardie, which is being released by StudioCanal in the U.K. No release date has yet been revealed.
