The decision to play “Fight the Power” as models marched down the runway at Milly’s presentation on Friday was no coincidence.
For her fall 2017 collection, designer Michelle Smith embraced the devastation and anguish she felt post-election by finding the beauty in destruction — er, deconstruction. “I call this collection ‘Fractured,'” Smith told The Hollywood Reporter backstage. “The name comes from the way I’ve been feeling post-election — I’ve been feeling kind of defeated as a woman.”
Her “fractured” emotions were translated literally — she slashed, tore and sliced through slip dresses and sweaters, and twisted men’s shirting and suits; she toyed with the idea of “backwards” ideologies by styling some pieces front-to-back. No metaphor was left unturned. “I’m just being honest about the way we’ve been feeling, owning it and finding the strength and the beauty of it,” she said.
Sitting front row were her own feminist fans, including Rowan Blanchard and Erin and Sara Foster, who filmed an episode of #PrettyInfluential, their comedic series of shorts in partnership with The Outnet and The Daily Front Row. While their six-episode miniseries is a humorous satire of influencers at New York Fashion Week, in which they assume their characters from their faux-reality show Barely Famous on VH1, the pair took a moment to seriously reflect on the political climate from the front row.
“Anytime you’re given a platform and people are paying attention to what you’re saying and doing, it’s your right to use that platform for your beliefs,” said Erin of the fashion industry’s political statements this season.
