Ahead of the Jan. 4 launch of Young Justice: Outsiders, DC Entertainment has launched a digital comic book prequel to the animated series, which happens to be the first comic book material exclusive to the service.
Set between the 2013 finale of the second season of Young Justice and the debut of Young Justice: Outsiders, the prequel comic book is written by series showrunner Greg Weisman and contains art by Christopher Jones. The story will be released in daily 10-page chapters ahead of the series’ launch, Jan. 4. The first two chapters debut on DC Universe today.
Young Justice: Outsiders is the second original series created exclusively for the DC Universe streaming service. Since its initial announcement, the question of when exclusive comic book content would debut on DC Universe has been an open one; the service was unveiled in June after months of rumors, with DC publisher, and chief creative officer, Jim Lee calling it a one-stop shop for all things DC.
Its launch announcement was accompanied with information about original TV content. Alongside Young Justice: Outsiders and Titans, shows announced for DCU include Swamp Thing and an animated Harley Quinn series. However, no unique comic book material was originally named, despite Lee and other DC and Warner Bros. executives emphasizing the importance of comic book content to the service.
The fact that DCU’s first original comic book material is tied to a media property shouldn’t come as a surprise; the comic library on the service, updated on a regular basis, has trended toward supporting DC media with Titans and Aquaman material in the forefront.
Young Justice: Outsiders, the animated series, launched Jan. 4.
