Zootopia Still 5 - H 2016

The Disney hit has grossed $19.2 million in the territory to date, while 'Kung Fu Panda 3' opens in the second spot as animation releases dominate.

Zootopia remained king of the German box office for a third week running, earning $3.3 million (€2.9 million) for the latest weekend to bring its total for the territory to $19.2 million (€17 million).

The animated comedy sold a further 345,000 tickets over the past weekend, bringing its admission total close to 2 million. That result already puts it ahead of Disney’s Big Hero 6, which earned around $14.6 million (€13 million) in Germany, although Zootopia, directed by Byron Howard, Rich Moore and Jared Bush, still has a way to go to top Pixar’s Inside Out, which earned $31.9 million (€28.4 million) in the territory.

It was an all-animated weekend for German filmgoers, as Kung Fu Panda 3 kicked off its local release in the number 2 spot, making it the highest new entry in the charts. The latest in the DreamWorks Animation franchise sold 170,000 tickets for a $1.57 million (€1.4 million) opening weekend in Germany. That bow was well behind the opening weekends for the first two Kung Fu Pandas in the country, but neither faced competition from the likes of Zootopia.

The Divergent Series: Allegiant was the only other new entry in the top 10, opening to $1.2 million (€950,000), the worst opening for the Divergent franchise in the country, but it good enough for the fourth spot in Germany this weekend behind local tragicomedy Der Geilste Tag, which earned $1.2 million (€1.05 million) in its sophomore outing.

Overall, there were around 1.2 million tickets sold in German over the past weekend for a total box office of $11.6 million (€10.3 million).
