German channels fined for call-in violations

Regulations for programs tightened earlier this year

COLOGNE, Germany -- A German regulatory commission has fined several local broadcasters for violating new laws governing call-in shows.

Sat.1 was slapped with a $58,000 fine for abuses on its call-in program "Quiznight." Das Vierte got a $18,000 charge for violations on its "Cashquiz" and "Spielmitmir" shows and 9Live has been charged in seven separate cases, though fines have yet to be levied.

This is the first wave of fines after regulations governing television call-in programs were tightened earlier this year. There had been widespread reports of abuse and fraud at the shows, which charge viewers to call in for the chance of winning a cash prize.
