German 'Host' gets Warner welcome

CANNES -- Jim Paratore's ParaMedia Inc has picked up U.S. format rights to German hit game show "Beat Your Host!" from ProSiebenSat.1's sales arm SevenOne International.

ParaMedia will produce a U.S. version of the show together with Warner Horizon Television, Warner Bros. Television Group's primetime reality programming arm.

The deal, announced at international TV market MIP-TV Wednesday, follows ABC's recent pickup of Germany's number one entertainment format "Wanna Bet?"

"Beat Your Host" features a contestant going up against a VIP host in a series of competitions ranging from pole vaulting, ping pong and geography trivia to who can best spread soft cheese on a sandwich. If the contestant wins, they take home a cash prize. If they lose, the money goes into a pot for the next show's contestant.

"Beat Your Host," produced by Raab TV and Brainpool in Germany, had the most successful debut for an entertainment format in the last three years in the territory, hitting ratings of up to 30% in the key 14-49 demographic for commercial channel ProSieben.

"The success of 'Beat your Host!' in Germany proves that the format works. We're excited to be in business with SevenOne International and look forward to working with them to create another success in the U.S." said Paratore.

Last month SevenOne International sold U.K., Swedish and Finnish remake rights to "Beat Your Host!" to the Zodiak Television Group (HR 03/30).

The deal between ParaMedia and SevenOne was brokered by ICM.
