German industry groups unite

MUNICH -- Ten German film industry organizations, among them the German Directors' Assn. (BVR), the Association of German Sound Engineers and the Association of Set Designers, Film Architects and Costume Designers are merging to create the National Coalition of Film Technician Associations, the BVR announced Wednesday.

The organization will represent the interests of film technicians in Germany to producers, broadcasters and distributors as well as to "all institutions of economic and cultural policy," the BVR said in a statement. Its goal is to "ensure international quality standards for German film and television productions."

The new organization, which is a more formal successor to the "working association of film technicians" founded in 1995, will have its headquarters in Munich. The official launch of the organization will take place Feb. 9 at the Berlin International Film Festival.
