Gibney set for MIPDOC honor

PARIS -- U.S. screenwriter, director and producer Alex Gibney will be the guest of honor at the international documentary showcase MIPDOC 2008, organizers said Tuesday.

Gibney will kick off the two-day event with a keynote speech on April 5, then serve as master of ceremonies at the 2008 Trailblazers Awards, which will honor producer Rea Apostolides of Greece, director Bon Hwan Ku of South Korea, director Yufuko Kuroda from Japan, director-producer Daniel Cross from Canada and director Karin Slater of South Africa. The Trailblazer nods are presented to innovative industry pioneers.

Gibney is known for his ambitious, award-winning documentaries including "Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room," "Taxi to the Dark Side" and "No End in Sight."

The daring director already has won an Independent Spirit award, a WGA award and Emmy awards; and his films have been selected for various international film festivals such as Sundance and Berlin.

"MIPDOC's vitality is driven by the creative and innovative professionals that network together from all across the documentary world," Reed MIDEM television division director Paul Johnson said in a statement.

A total of 469 companies from 60 countries came out for last year's showcase, which highlighted 1,311 programs.
