'Gidget' director dies at 84

Paul Wendkos' credits include 'The Burglar, 'Hawaii Five-O'

Paul Wendkos, the "Gidget" director who helmed more than 100 films and TV shows during a 50-year career, died Nov. 12 in Malibu of a lung infection that followed a stroke. He was 84.

"Gidget" (1959), starring Sandra Dee as an all-American surfer girl, was a boxoffice hit and led to two sequels for Wendkos. His other credits include "The Burglar" (1957), starring Jayne Mansfield, and "Guns of the Magnificent Seven" (1969).

For television, he directed episodes of such series as "The Rifleman" and "Hawaii Five-O" and such telefilms as "The Legend of Lizzie Borden" and "The Ordeal of Patty Hearst."

Among Wendkos' survivors is his wife Lin Bolen, a former NBC producer.
