The world is black-and-white in the second trailer for the upcoming film adaptation of the 1993 Lois Lowry novel.

Meryl Streep sports a gray wig and a bad attitude in the newest trailer for the star-studded film adaptation of The Giver

In this second, longer trailer, Jonas (Maleficent's Brenton Thwaites) meets The Giver (Jeff Bridges) and starts to learn some shocking secrets about their seemingly perfect community. "Our people chose to do away with emotions," The Giver explains to Jonas. "Those morning injections take them away."

Once Jonas starts avoiding the injections, he can finally see the world in color.  But the Chief Elder (Streep) isn't particularly thrilled about Jonas's curiosity. "I'm surprised you're not more worried about him -- I would be," she warns Jonas' mom (Katie Holmes).

The film co-stars Taylor Swift (conspicuously imperceptible in the first two trailers), Alexander Skarsgard and The Odd Life of Timothy Green's Odeya Rush.

The Giver was directed by Phillip Noyce, whose last film was 2010 spy thriller Salt. Michael Mitnick wrote the screenplay, based on the 1993 novel of the same name by Lois Lowry. Lowry's novel won the 1994 Newbery Medal for children's literature.

The Weinstein Company will release the film on August 15 and is clearly hoping that it touches the zeitgeist like dystopian YA film adaptations The Hunger Games and Divergent
