THE DRESSES

Angelina Jolie: All eyes were on In the Land of Blood and Honey’s director, who eschewed her usual black in favor of an icy satin Atelier Versace gown with 25-carat Lorriane Schwartz diamond earrings. Jolie played up her crimson asymmetrical neckline with a matching Christian Louboutin clutch and retro lip.

Claire Danes: Homeland’s star, who took home a best actress trophy for the Showtime drama, turned heads in embroidered J. Mendel couture with more than $250,000 worth of Bulgari diamonds. "I’m not used to backless, but it gives you something else to do on the red carpet," Danes said of her sexy pose.

Michelle Williams: "It’s Jason Wu," My Week With Marilyn’s best actress winner said of her fitted velvet burnout gown, which she accented with a vintage satin headband by Fred Leighton for Forevermark. The look was more 1920s screen siren than 1950s pinup.

Julianna Margulies: The Good Wife’s nominee glittered in a plum-hued backless Naeem Khan gown with Lorraine Schwartz’s statement-making jade drops.

Charlize Theron: This awards season’s red-carpet chameleon (nominated for Young Adult) was a modern flapper in blush Dior Haute Couture with a 1920s platinum and diamond headband by Cartier Collection.

Helen Mirren: "I like a bit of a sleeve on a party dress," said the Badgley Mischka-clad presenter, who complemented her elegant evening look with Fred Leighton’s circa 1930 sapphire and diamond bracelet.

Viola Davis: The Help’s nominee stepped out in a Grecian-style custom chiffon gown by Emilio Pucci with towering Jimmy Choo sandals and a crystal Judith Leiber clutch.

Berenice Bejo: "Everyone thought I’d wear Elie Saab because I do a lot, but I like to surprise," The Artist’s star said of the silk organza Gucci gown she found a day before the show. Extra glitz? A stunning 69-carat yellow diamond cuff by Chopard.

Julianne Moore: The presenter, who was dressed by Leslie Fremar (also Charlize Theron’s stylist), added a pop of color to her tiered Chanel Haute Couture gown with Fred Leighton’s emerald-and-diamond tassel earrings totaling 66 carats.
