From berry stains to rich, velvety scarlets, a few stars' pouts stood out in a sea of nude lips.

The Golden Globes’ red carpet featured many shades of nude lipstick, but a few dissenters stood out in versions of scarlet, both bright and deep. One of the night’s best pops was the fuchsia-imbued red worn by 12-year-old Millie Bobby Brown. Anna Kendrick’s Vionnet gown may have caught mixed reviews, but her lip look was a hands-down winner. Celebrity makeup artist Vanessa Scali gave her a berry-hued stain using Avon True Color Nourishing Lipstick in Berry Sangria ($8), applied with a lip brush and blotted for a subtle finish.

“A power pout always looks classic, and darker hues are definitely on trend,” says Scali. “That said, ‘dark’ is a relative term, since the shade I used on Anna may not read the same on a different skin tone. She has delicate features and alabaster skin, so I chose a shade that would have enough depth to read bold against her skin but wasn’t too dark to overwhelm her,” she adds.

Lily Collins — in Lancome Souvenir ($32), applied perfectly by Fiona Stiles and finished with loose powder on top to “matte it out” — and Brie Larson rocked classic scarlet shades in matte finishes that appeared like rich velvet on their lips.

In the deeper-hue camp were Priyanka Chopra and Kerry Washington, whose makeup artist Carola Gonzalez used a blackberry-esque shade of Neutrogena’s new Hydro Boost Hydrating Lip Shine ($9). For Chopra’s rich raisin-y red, makeup artist Stephanie Brooke Barnes used a mix of Laura Mercier lipsticks ($28). For her, the actress’ lips and eyes were the centerpieces of the look. “A classic red lip will never go out of style in my opinion!”
