Gael Garcia Bernal won for his performance in 'Mozart in the Jungle.'

Gael Garcia Bernal took home the best actor award for his performance on Mozart in the Jungle at the Golden Globes on Sunday night. It was his first nomination and first win.

Bernal received best performance by an actor in a TV series, comedy honors over fellow nominees Aziz Ansari (Master of None), Rob Lowe (The Grinder), Patrick Stewart (Blunt Talk) and last year's winner, Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent), whose show received more nominations than any other comedy or musical this year.

In addition to Bernal's award for best actor, Mozart in the Jungle won the Golden Globe for best TV series, musical or comedy, usurping Transparent in both categories.

"This is really incredible. This is really a big surprise," Bernal said in his acceptance speech. "Thank you for all the team of Mozart in the Jungle, you guys are my family."

The 73rd annual Golden Globes, hosted by Ricky Gervais, were held in Beverly Hills on Jan. 10.
