Gooding gets up nerve for TNT's 'Hands'

Cuba Gooding Jr. is set to portray a real-life neurologist in "Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story," a TNT original movie that will air under the Johnson & Johnson Spotlight Presentation banner.

The movie, based on Carson's memoir, will trace his journey from frustrated inner-city kid to director of pediatric neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore. It will air in the first quarter.

"Gifted Hands" is executive produced by Dan Angel, Margaret Loesch, Bruce Stein, Erin Keating and Thomas Carter. The telefilm is from Sony Pictures TV, Magna Global Entertainment, Thomasfilm and the Hatchery. The book was optioned by the Hatchery, which brought it, along with Carter ("Coach Carter"), to TNT and Sony. Carter will direct from a script by John Pielmeier.

Carson's memoir, which he wrote with Cecil Murphey, describes his childhood in a rough neighborhood of Detroit. Encouraged by his mother, Carson pushed himself throughout school. His accomplishments led him to be named a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. (partialdiff)
