Lauren Scruggs, Former 'Gossip Girl' Intern, Loses Eye After Plane Propeller Accident
The 23-year-old model and fashion blogger is recovering, but is still “in excruciating pain,” says her mother.
Lauren Scruggs has lost her left hand and now, her left eye, after accidentally walking into a spinning plane propeller on Dec. 3.
The 23-year-old model previously served as an intern in the Gossip Girl wardrobe department, as well as the Michael Kors showroom. She is the founder of the fashion blog, Lolo.
“Lauren is recovering remarkable well, given the circumstances,” said her mother Cheryl Scruggs, in a statement obtained by People. “The doctors are VERY pleased with her progress.”
Immediately following the accident, Scruggs underwent reconstructive surgeries on her face and shoulder and had her left hand amputated. The family had hoped her left eye could be saved, but it was removed on Wednesday.
“She is in excruciating pain,” her mother said. “Please pray for her appetite to return and for her to have the patience to take this journey one day at a time.”
“We have been praying for a miracle,” she continued. “The miracle that Jesus gave us is a prosthesis. We continue to be eternally grateful for your prayers and support. It means more than words can say.”
Scruggs' family and friends offer updates on her condition via the Caring Bridge website, and have set up a Lauren Scruggs Hope Fund for donations. It remains unclear how the Plano, Texas native accidentally walked into the propeller, but Scrugg’s parents speculate that she had turned around to thank the pilot after exiting the aircraft. She had been riding the prop plane with a friend to get an aerial view of the Dallas Christmas lights.
