The Gotham Awards traditionally marks the official start of Oscar season, recognizing the best in independent film. Recent past winners have included Oscar nominees Inside Llewyn Davis, The Act of Killing, Moonrise Kingdom, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Beginners, The Tree of Life, Winter’s Bone and The Hurt Locker.
Swinton, who won a best supporting actress Oscar for her role in Michael Clayton, this year starred in Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel, Jim Jarmusch's Only Lovers Left Alive and Bong Joon-Ho's Snowpiercer.
Miller's latest film, Foxcatcher, debuted at Cannes to rave reviews and is being seen as an Oscar contender ahead of its Nov. 14 release by Sony Pictures Classics. Miller's last film Moneyball received six Oscar nominations and his prior movie, Capote, earned him a best director Oscar nomination and star Philip Seymour Hoffman an Academy Award for best actor. Miller received the breakthrough director and best feature award for Capote at the 2005 Gotham Awards.
