Gottschalk ups Tele 5 celeb quotient

COLOGNE, Germany -- German celebrity Thomas Gottschalk has signed with cable channel Tele 5 as a promoter, adviser and on-air host.

Gottschalk, who regularly draws a 40% market share, or more than 13 million viewers, for his variety show "Want a Bet?" on pubcaster ZDF, will present a regular movie editorial on Tele 5, host special film nights on the channel and promote Tele 5 in TV and radio spots.

In a news conference Monday in Munich, Herbert Kloiber, head of Tele 5 parent company Tele-Muenchen Gruppe, said Gottschalk will also act as a program advisor for the Munich-based channel.

As part of the agreement, Gottschalk will receive profit participation in Tele 5 as soon as the channel crosses break-even. Despite a successful relaunch last year as a niche movie station, Tele 5 remains a money-loser with a market share of below 1%.

The new job does not mean Gottschalk is abandoning ZDF. The presenter recently extended his deal with the pubcaster through to 2010.
