'Great War' to be Venice pre-opening film

Fifty years after it won the Golden Lion in Venice

ROME -- Fifty years after it won the Golden Lion on the Venice Lido, Mario Monicelli's classic "La Grande Guerra" (The Great War) will reappear in Venice in a completely refurbished state and the festival's official pre-opening film.

The screening will take place at the Arena di Campo San Polo in Venice on Sept. 1, the eve of the festival. Giuseppe Tornatore's coming of age comedy "Baaria -- La porta de Vento" is the official opening film of the Sept. 2-12 festival.

Festival officials said that the 94-year-old Monicelli -- whose honors also include a career Venice Golden Lion from 1991 and two Oscar nominations -- will be on hand for the screening.
