Green light for Orange Cinema Series

France Telecom to launch service Nov. 13

PARIS -- Gallic telecom Orange has received the green light from the state-broadcasting regulator to go launch its subscription-based multiplatform Orange Cinema Series on Nov. 13.

After negotiations between France Telecom and major players in the French film industry heated up last month over how much Orange should invest in national cinema, the future of the Orange Cinema Series remained uncertain.

However, Orange and the CSA signed an agreement Friday, giving the telecom the definitive go-ahead as long as they vow to give 2.01 euros ($2.60) per month, per subscriber to producers until their subscription offer (currently at 12 euros ($15.33) per month) attracts 1.5 million clients.

After Orange reaches more than 3 million subscribers, the company will have to pay 3.12 euros ($3.99) per client, per month -- the same sum as pay TV group Canal Plus is required to pay.

Orange still needs to come to an agreement with the French film industry regarding its investment in national production, but the launch of Orange Cinema Series will go ahead as scheduled Nov. 13.
