Group eyes big Christmas for Euro DVD sales

LONDON -- Predicting a bumper Christmas period, home entertainment industry promotion group DEG Europe on Tuesday said that it expects DVD sales to rise 8% in volume and 0.6% in value by the end of the year.

The pan-European industry body said that DVD sales for the six months through June soared 5.7% compared with 2006 and that DVD player sales also grew 3.4% year-over-year.

"It is hugely promising to see such healthy figures for the year so far, and we are confident that 2007 will finish on a high," DEG Europe spokesman Yves Caillaud said.

"Looking at the impressive list of boxoffice titles that will be coming to the DVD market this quarter, we are able to make very positive, full year predictions of substantial year-on-year growth," Caillaud added.

Members of DEG Europe include Cinram, Fox Home Entertainment, Paramount Home Entertainment, Sony DADC, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Technicolor, Toshiba, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment Europe and Warner Home Video Europe.
