The Gurin Company To Adapt Half-Hour Version of German Show Hit 'Wanna Bet?' for U.S.

The long-running format has been a ratings hit for German public broadcaster ZDF.

Phil Gurin's The Gurin Company has signed a new deal with Germany's ZDF Enterprises to do a daily, half-hour version of long-running show format Wanna Bet? for the U.S. market.

Gurin previously developed an hour-long version of Wanna Bet? for the U.S.. The half-hour version will focus on the game show elements of the format – in which ordinary people make bets on whether they can pull off incredibly and unbelievable feats. Phil Gurin will develop the U.S. version together with Oliver Fuchs, the head of ZDF’s show department.

“I’ve spent the past several years formulating a brand-new daily version of this classic show and we’re thrilled to partner with the outstanding ZDF team on a new global roll-out,” Gurin said. “The show has everything a big entertainment format requires, and we hope to introduce this new version to markets big and small. It’s a classic title, reimagined as a brand-new daily.”

Every half-hour episode of the new show will consist of five different bets, four of which are taken from ZDF's extensive Wanna Bet? archive and one new live bet which takes place in the studio. Four candidates get a certain amount of money for their wagers. The one who wins the most money gets to keep his or her winnings.

ZDF Enterprises, the commercial arm of German public broadcaster ZDF, said it had already begun preliminary talks with European buyers at TV market MIPCOM in Cannes last year for the new half-hour format. The original long version of Wanna Bet? is a massive hit in Germany, with viewer figures regularly topping 10 million. The format has also sold worldwide to territories from The Netherlands to Russia and China.
