'Hairspray' set for Locarno's Piazza Grande

ROME -- The film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical "Hairspray" will screen at the Locarno Film Festival's Piazza Grande, the event's organizers said Wednesday.

The screening at the 60th Locarno event's most famous venue will be the first time the film will be shown to the public outside the U.S. or U.K., where it will premiere a week earlier. The Adam Shankman-directed project stars John Travolta, Christopher Walken, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Queen Latifah.

The Locarno Film festival runs Aug. 1-11.
